Gorilla Loves Vanilla

Gorilla Loves Vanilla written by Chae Strathie is an exciting read for young children. Through creativity and humour, Strathie is able to keep children engaged throughout the story; children are given endless opportunities to laugh and make predictions. by the end of the story children will be able to better understand the concept of sharing, and that being greedy is never the answer. After all:
IF A GORILLA CAN SHARE, SO CAN CHILDREN!!

This weeks poem of the week was about sharing. Children are encouraged to share with their peers in any context. Sharing is very important as it allows for a positive and flowing environment; less arguments arise when children share. By reading this story, I was able to get the children to discuss their thoughts and feelings about sharing. The story was very engaging and the children were eager to share their ideas.
From a simple story, I was able to get the children thinking about their own personal experiences in regards to sharing. The children mentioned what they love to share and I recorded it on a large chart paper for them to see. In addition, to further extend this learning experience, I encouraged the children to come to my Centre and illustrate their recordings. The list is now hanging on the wall in their classroom for the children to see. By adding the illustrations, children are better able to read and understand what is written on the chart paper.
