The Importance of Dramatic Play in Early Childhood Education

  February 17, 2017.     l     Adriana Mercuri

Dramatic play can be defined as a type of play where children accept and assign roles, and the act them out. It is a time when they break through the walls of reality, pretend to be someone or something different from themselves, and dramatize situations and actions that go along with the roles they have chosen to play.

Many people believe that this type of play is pointless, but it remains an integral part of the developmental learning process by allowing children to develop skills in every domain. Children develop skills such as: critical thinking, literacy, math, social skills, and many more that help children become knowledgable members of society. The skills they receive from this play last a lifetime and helps children gain the skills they need to survive and understand the world around them.
In my placement classroom, I identified a possible issue that is restricting children form developing a creative imagination. For starters, the Drama Centre in my FDK classroom is always the same; it is centred around housekeeping. I feel that this is a very traditional set-up that enforces the norms of society, as opposed to teaching children of the diversity of the world.

For starters, by keeping the Drama Centre the same, children are playing the same roles repeatedly, engaging in the same conversations, and playing the same games. Children are not expanding their learning and are taught how to be as society imagines they should be. In addition, the same children seem to visit this Centre because they have become used to playing the same roles.
A few possible themes that educators can use in their Drama Centre include:
  • Post Office
  • Doctors Office
  • Police Station
  • Pizza Shop
  • Grocery Store
  • Garden Centre
There are many more other ideas to set-up the Drama Centre differently, but these are the few that I can think of. To find more ideas, look on Pinterest because they have plenty of ideas that you would love!
