There Was an old lady who swallowed a bat
Halloween is on the first day of next week (Monday). The chidlren are very excited to wear their costumes and go trick or treating. To end of the week in an exciting way, i decided to read 'There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bat' by Lucille Colandro. This story is very funny and teaches the children about patterns, repetition, and sequence. The old lady swallows several different Halloween figures that the children can easily identify, gets fat, and with a final BURP blows them all out of her tummy.
The children will be invited to the board while i read the story to place the figure she swallows in her belly. By doing so, I feel that the children will be motivated to stay focused and will feel more involved in the story telling process. The children are challenged to find the matching spot for the figure in the lady's belly.
Once the story is finished, the children will have to reflect on what they heard and try to remember the order that the old lady swallowed the Halloween figures. I will ask the children what she swallowed first, second, etc., I will write it on the paper, and I will have that chid come place it in its particular spot. At the end, we will do a short retell to conclude the story.
