The Peace Activity

This week is Remembrance Day week. The children will be learning about peace and the ways in which we can spread peace within our classroom, homes, and the world. Instead of reading the story to the children, I decided to play this video read aloud for the children to watch. I feel that the children should be able to listen to stories using different media devices instead of always hearing the teacher read to them. By doing so, I think that children will be motivated to listen more, as they want to see what is going to come on the screen next and hear what is going to be said by the voice in the background.

To extend this experience I discussed what peace looks/sounds like with the children. In the beginning I encouraged the children to listen for ways in which peace is expressed. Once the story was done, I explained how the story mentioned several ways in which peace looks/sounds like and I asked the children to help me fill in our list. The children were eager to share their ideas and many of them came up with their own definitions of peace rather than copying ideas from the story. All of their answers were very thoughtful and I couldn't be happier with the outcome of our list!
